Melissa's wedding was classy yet fun, and it was a pleasure to be her florist.

For her reception we did long rows of tables and filled the center with bud vases and lots of fresh blooms. The result looked like a field of wildflowers, it was beautiful! I should have more pics from the reception soon.

We are lucky to have amazing friends! Sometimes it seems hard not being 10 minutes away from our families, but it is so nice to know we still have people we can count on.

A Few of my Favorite Things

When it comes to kids stuff, I tend to lean toward hand made rather than store bought. However I don't usually take the time to sew or "craft" a lot. Which is why I am grateful that other people feel that Stella deserves pretty things, so they provide them for her.

My Grandmother is one of those people. She makes beautiful things for Stella (and me) and they always seem to be just my taste.

This skirt poofs over her butt perfectly. (Stellas butt. Not my Grandmothers butt.)

I really love how Stella looks like such a toddler in this photo - little square feet and her belly poking out. I wish she would never grow up.

Stella is already having innovative ideas when it comes to fashion. I am so proud.

Rhetts mom is also a talented seamstress, check out her Etsy shop. She made Stella this little owl pillow.

And then there is Megan, the Knitress of the Night. It is really crocheting, not knitting. I thought the name was clever so I found a way to use it. She made Stella these hats and I love them! Unfortunately they are still getting much use, even into May.

And last but not least, my Mom. I wanted to make Stellas bedding, but my belly was HUGE and frankly, it was just in the way. So my Mom basically made it for me while I enjoyed potato chips on the couch and watched her. I pretended like I was watching the Martha Stewart show, that way I didn't feel bad for not helping more. Martha Stewart never needs help.

Blankets make playing with toys even more fun. This is usually our blanket of choice.

She also Crocheted this big beautiful blanket. It is not our blanket of choice when it comes to play, because I am keeping it nice so Stella can give it to her daughter one day.

Basically I am surrounded by amazing people. Just thought you would like to know.

(I actually think it is someone trying to make a political statement about the poor condition of London's roads. I like the idea of a little old lady a lot better.)

Hello my little darlings who still read my long lost blog. I took a little break to create this little beauty:

My little Stella baby. Yup, call me mommy.

I have had my hand in a few flower adventures during my year long break, but not a whole lot. I have missed it terribly and I am dying to get my hands on a few more weddings for the summer.

One of the things I have missed most about having a wedding every weekend is always having fresh flowers on my table. Last Spring I was asked to do the bouquets for the Wedding Showcase Fashion Show. This was a dream come true, because I got to pick all the flowers and just go to town and do whatever I wanted. One of my favorite flowers that you don't see very often are Hellebores. These dainty little girls have the most beautiful speckled petals and curvy little celery green stems.

I ordered 1 bunch of them to go in a bouquet. The night before the show when I received my order, my little friends the Hellebores were nowhere to be found. I was totally disappointed. My supplier felt so bad that they hadn't arrived on time, that they actually had the whole shipment forwarded to me at the show. With NO CHARGE. In the middle of a long day at a bridal show I got a special delivery and I did NOT share it. Actually I think I did give a couple of bunches away but I saved the other 30 for my little old kitchen table. I spent an approximate total of 2 whole days of my life just looking at these flowers and taking pictures of my favorite ones and watching them bloom. I am sure I had more important things to do that I was choosing to ignore. Oh what a wonderful day.

Anyway. The point is my break is over and I am back!!

A Riter Wedding: Heather in the Autumn

Heather and I actually never met. Not once through the whole wedding planning process did I meet her face to face, which I was so dissapointed about. We had several phone conversations and lots of emails, but she planned her whole wedding from Oregon so a face to face consult was out. Thank you Heather for trusting me, without ever meeting me, and for giving me the privilege of reaping the rewards of your good taste. Enjoy the pretty pictures.

Shea and John were married clear back in June. I am a little behind on my posting! Shea's wedding colors were pink, pink, pink, and pink, paired with a soft feminine grey. A combo that turned out great, thanks to her excellent style and planning. Her centerpieces were delicious pink cheesecakes (I was lucky enough to sample a piece) with a small gathering a mini roses in the center. The linens were beautiful too... Marcie always does such a great job. Thanks for your confidence in me Shea, and I wish you and John the best!

Here are the photos from Andrea and Josh's wedding. Check out her dress! Thats right, she got married in a black and white polka dot dress. Its not often you get to do a wedding that is so full of personality, so it was a fun opportunity for me. My favorite part of the bouquet was the big black gems... they add so much sparkle! Andrea was so sweet to work with and so complimentary and grateful towards me. She and Josh are a darling couple. (I just sounded like my grandma. I mean they are an awesome couple. Hee hee.)

Check out the post I did right before this one... I think it is so interesting to see two brides with the same color scheme who have taken it in two totally different directions. That is one of the reasons I love what I do so much - it is always different!

Just a few pics of a simple black and white wedding from early July. Black and white Callas and some (wonderful smelling) Freesia. The stem wrap was my favorite, wrapped in white and beaded in black. Jess had seen something similar in a photo and loved it, so we took the idea and ran with it! I am totally into this black and white trend, I have 2 fun ones in August that I cant wait for. This girl is FULL of style. She chose an array of vintage purples (my personal current favorite) and grays for her colors. He centerpieces were some of my favorite so far this summer - paper lanterns and wine bottles. Minimalist and simple. Her reception had beautiful ambiance, and was romantic as well as fun.

A couple weeks after the wedding we just happened to end up sitting by Brett and Emily at the STYX concert- turns out they can plan a pretty wedding and cut a rug. My head banging skills are not what they used to be, but I think Rhett and I gave Brett a run for his money.

Stephanie and Andrew got married Memorial day weekend, it has taken me forever to post these photos.

I was worried about their reception, it was a garden reception and it had been RAINY for a week straight! They wouldn't even consider moving inside, so there was no backup plan. Luckily just as I finished putting the centerpieces on the tables, the skies cleared and it was a beautiful evening. Stephanie wanted a very garden style wedding, so we opted for wreaths on the tables rather than the typical vase. It was fun to do something so different. And the blue Hydrangea held up! (for once!) Happy wedding Stephanie and Andrew, you are a great couple.

Not only does she have a lot of personality, but she is good at bringing it all together for a wedding that is so "her." I have totally sucked at blogging lately. And I am still going to suck for the next little while... too much going on!

The good news is spring is finally here! I don't judge this fact on the weather, but by the flowers. The trees are in bloom and the the Lilac bushes are just getting tiny buds on them. Finally! I have been steadily awaiting the Lilac and Cherry blossoms.

Anyway, I just wanted to post a couple photos of a summer bouquet. This bouquet (although it was done in the dead of winter) has such a warm summer feel to it. I did it for the Wedding Showcase fashion show, it looked super cool paired with a green Orchid in the models hair. And of course I have to mention the vibrant pink Gloriosa Lilly, one of my very favorite flowers. (At the moment. ;)

Ode to prommers

I really have a lot to post about... 2 weddings since my last post.

Last weekend was prom. The night before my little bro calls me and says:

"Ummmm Candyce? I need like one of those flower thingies for prom. Can you find me one or something?" Because I don't keep a stock of flowers in my fridge, I was unable to help him so last minute. So I turned to my friends at the Mace of Base (Maceys) and this is what I found:

More corsages and boutonnieres than I have ever seen in my life. They had literally HUNDREDS of corsage and boutonniere orders. I also found a big sign reading Maceys Floral is no longer accepting prom orders. We are out of flowers. Holy crap! Luckily, I was able to take apart mess ups and gather a few things off the floor to put together 2 corsages for my little brother and little brother in law. Dont worry, they didn't look like mess ups or floor garbage after a little tweaking and gluing.

After being there with them during this hectic time, I grew a new appreciation for the prom florist. When trying to take orders they are constantly hearing things like "her dress is a tealish like color" (its the ish that gets you. Any color could be anything if you add an ish on the end of it.) Or things like: "So like my date might trade dresses with her friend so... her dress color might change so... if it does could I have you change the color of the corsage when I come to pick it up?" Or there is always the person who wants black flowers. Enough said about them.

Anyway, these florists work hard. The Maceys girls were up until the wee hours of the morning the night before. All I can say is, I don't think I will ever offer prom services. Young people, I love you. But I don't know what color tealish is. (Do they mean just teal? Blue? Green? Aqua? Light chartuse? I still don't know.)

Floral Design Show

Sweet Pea Sarah Z

I am back! I have actually been back for awhile, but have been too busy to blog. Lots of summer weddings! Mexico was great but I am excited to get back into the swing of things. This was the first of my Spring Break weddings, Sarah and Ryan. Sarah and I have been friends forever. From wide leg jeans, to platform shoes, to Jennifer Aniston layers, we have done it all together. When we sat down to talk about Sarah's wedding flowers, all through the brainstorming of color and texture and shape, Sweet Pea was her main floral request. This made me smile, because Sweet Pea has always reminded me of Sarah. Back in middle school when Bath and Body works lotion was really cool, Sweet Pea was "her scent." She had the Sweet Pea lotion, body spray, you name it. I was VERY disappointed to break the news to Sarah that Sweet Pea would be unavailable, (Ugh! I hate that!) but I think we found some nice substitutes. She wanted a very unique bouquet, so we added Echeveria and Fern Curls to give it an untraditional look. Green and white Parrot Tulips wrapped with Variegated Lilly Grass topped every table, and Cabbage Rose petals hung from every chandelier. Sarah your wedding was beautiful, congratulations. Thanks for making me a part of your very special day!

Una pequeña aventura Mexicana!

Inspitation boards

Abby from Style Me Pretty has a fabulous thing going on on her blog, she calls them Inspiration Boards. The bride compiles a board of her wedding "image." These are photos the bride has cut out of magazines and glued or mod podged on to canvas or matte board. You could also take the Photoshop route, if you are a little more technologically inclined. There have been several times I have wished a bride had one of these to show me, it would be so beneficial in helping me create the wedding of her dreams. It can be hard for a bride to convey the feel or mood they are going for and looking at an inspiration board helps you to just "get it." I thought I would share with you a couple of my favorites, you can see more at stylemepretty.com.

Sarah and Sara

Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing.... Sarah and Sara! These two girls are a gem in the floral industry. I grew up just up the street from Sarah P, and she really helped instill in me a love for flowers. She was constantly doing weddings around the neighborhood, and teaching Young Women classes about flower arranging. She taught me that I could take something I loved and make a career out of it. Sarah P taught me all the rules of flower arranging and then Sara N taught me to break them! ( of course Sarah P breaks all the rules too, she just had to make sure I knew the rules so I could break them successfully.) Sara N has this ability to create things you would never imagine in your wildest dreams. (Of course they always look amazing.) She combines color and texture flawlessly. Looking for that exotic flower that only grows deep in the jungles of Africa? Not only will Sarah P be able to tell you what it is, she will know everything about it.

Thanks for all your flower inspiration girls, and I miss working with you every day!

Beautiful Leftovers

This is what is left of last weekends spring break weddings. Over 100 stems of green Parrot Tulips, and this is what remains. (Of course there is more, currently overtaking the mother of the brides house!) I love the green flecks on the white and the two toned leaves. I couldn't bear to throw away the little Ranunculus buds, so I stuck them in the vase too. I am enjoying them on my desk today, makes me feel like Spring is here!

Wedding Trends 2008

This is one of the bouquets I did for the fashion show. I have totally been into steel grey for weddings, and apparently I am not the only one! Theknot.com says steel grey is the new accent color. I was glad to hear I wasn't entirely up in the night with my 'wedding trend intuition'. And the best part... Cache Valley is COMPLETELY in style this year! I have several brides who are doing a lot of the big wedding trends, like the steel grey or winter wonderland wedding. Usually we are a bit behind on the times. So way to go girls, I am definitely impressed. I would love to see steel grey with a bubble gum pink or even a bold orange. How fun!

Wedding Showcase... Success!

Well, Wedding Showcase 2008 is done! It was lots of work, but well worth it. Thanks to everyone who came, and especially thanks to all the girls who helped me with the fashion show. The fashion show was fun, but next years will be KILLER. In fact we just had a meeting today to start the planning process all over again! I can't say enough about Serendipity Salon and Spa, who did and AMAZING job on all the hair and makeup for the fashion show. Serendipity and The Mens Wearhouse models were great cheerleaders during the kissing contest, which was on of my favorite highlights of the event. Oo la la! Congrats to the lucky winner of the Palmer's shopping spree, and the lucky bride who won Kellee's "happiest bride"contest. Thanks to all who came, it was so fun to meet and mingle with all of you. I feel like I missed out on lots of the action, because I was a host I had lots of responsibilities that drew me away from my booth. But I look forward to meeting with all of you about your flowers in the future!

I want to invite everyone to a huge event I have been working on! Its called The Wedding Showcase, and its a bridal event coming up in 2 weeks. It has been lots of work, but it will definitely be worth it! Some of the highlights include free hair and makeup demos by Serendipity Salon, free mini treatments by the spa at Brio, free limmo rides, and TONS of giveaways including a $1000.00 shopping spree to Palmer Home Furnishings! We are having 2 high style fashion shows at 4:00 and 7:00. The fashion shows will be killer, Serendipity is doing all the hair and makeup, and we have found some really trendy stylish gowns from Petals and Promises and Avonlea. Everything you need to plan your wedding will be all in one place, thanks to the 37 wedding professionals we have invited.

The date is Feb 23, 2008 at The Bullen Center, from 3-9 PM. I will be there with several wedding floral books, so stop by and brainstorm for a minute. (Or just chill with me, I would enjoy that too.) Crisp Autumn

So, I know its February, but... I am still playing catch up.

Autumn is my absolute favorite season. I was married in autumn, on one of those perfect clear crisp September days, the kind that make you never want to go inside. There was one disappointment last Autumn, however. Nobody wanted an Autumn bouquet! All the brides I had wanted very Summery bouquets. (I don't blame them. Summer is definantly a close second for me when it comes to favorite seasons.) So, one day as I was pondering the fact that Autumn was almost gone and still no Autumn bouquet, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I had a bunch of leftover flowers from a couple weddings the weekend before, and I realized that if I combined them it would be... an Autumn bouquet! A quick trip to Maceys for some fresh Sage and dried Chili Peppers, and wala! A beautiful bouquet. I love the wheat, it is what really makes this a Fall bouquet. And if you look closely enough, you might notice the bronze shimmer I sprayed on the Sage and Roses. The Waxflower is my favorite variety, the yellowish orangish pinkinsh kind. And the Curly Willow... a lot of people are afraid to put sticks in a wedding bouquet but I LOVE it! Its easy to make something beautiful when the flowers are already perfect.

Something Blue...

Heather and Kyle's wedding stands out in my mind as one of the most beautiful days of the whole summer. Of course the afternoon was blazing hot (it was August, and the Hydrangeas in her bouquet proved it) but as you can see from the photos, the evening was absolutely beautiful. They had their reception in Kyle's backyard in Mount Sterling, The view was AMAZING. The blue and pink looked perfect against the yellow fields. Heather wanted that fresh picked look to her bouquet, blush Calla Lillies and blue Hydrangea were the perfect combo. The Lemon filled vases were also fun... they smelled delicious! PLUS they cut almost all the lemons for me. Yes! Thanks Heather and Kyle, I hope you guys are doing great!

Color Girl

This was a wedding I did back in December, for Jennifer Jacobsen. She and I met at Square One Printing, when I went in to have more business cards made. She said "Hey! You do wedding flowers?" I gave her a big fat "You bet I do!" and the rest was history! It also turned out her fiance, Shane, was an old high school friend I hadn't seen in forever. Jennifer was super fun and easy going, and I think her bouquet totally matched her personality. Although it was mid December, her bouquet had that bright cheery feel, a perfect burst of color in the middle of a dreary winter. She originally wanted only Gerbera Daisies in her bouquet, but when I suggested some green Hypericum with a Ti Leaf collar, she was totally open to the idea. As long as I didn't do anything too "crazy" :) Well I thought it turned out great, and apparently she did too, because she had me do the exact same one for her bridals and wedding day. Oh and she also sent me a super cute post card thank you note, with a photo of her and Shane on the front. How creative! Thanks to Wendell Pace for the great photos.

Riter Mansion Open House

Right now I am surrounded by Boston Ferns. (Gigantic absolutely gorgeous Boston Ferns, might I add.) This weekend was the Riter Mansion open house. I was asked to do all the centerpieces, and my friend and fellow wedding professional Nikkol was the event designer. One of the (many) things she did was the snowflakes... don't you love the little sparkly ones she put in the Ferns? John and Arlette (Riter Mansion owners) wanted something more on the corporate side, and less wedding. Hmmmm. Plants, rather than vases of cut flowers, were the perfect alternative. I did however add cut tulips to the Ferns, to give them a softer feel. Once the tall Curly Willow was in, they really had that natural organic feel I love. Here are the photos, thanks to Kellee who totally went out of her way just to come and take photos for me. If any of you are looking for a wedding photographer, she is amazing. Little Miss Bloggie

Well, it's official. I am a blogger! I am excited to have a place to gather my ideas, photos, and most importantly my thoughts. Ever since I started with Urban Floral my brain has been going about a million miles an hour. I also thought this would be a great way for my potential clients to see my work. Almost every time I speak with someone about a wedding or any other event they say, "Do you have photos of your work?" (Oh boy do I ever!) "Can I see them?" Uhhhh... (awkward pause...) So in order to avoid sitting in front of my laptop with them sifting through my random photos of random events and weddings, I am putting my photos here. So here it is, my blog, my biz and me!
